When They Stooped Low

Satan dangled Uriah’s wife, Bath Sheba, before David. She was like a ripe apple, too ripe for David to resist! Yes, David saw a naked woman bathing, desired her, committed adultery with her and finally committed murder in order to have her for himself! No matter how much of a celebrated beauty Bath Sheba was, David was not supposed to covet her. Didn’t he know the law? Didn’t he meditate on the law day and night? Didn’t he swear to keep the law in his heart? Didn’t he have his own wife? I believe that David’s encounter with this woman was not entirely coincidental or accidental. Bath Sheba was a daughter of Eliam, one of David’s bodyguards. This lady was also a wife to one of David’s chief army officers. There is no way she could be such a total stranger who’s father or husband David could claim not to have known. Why then could the king stoop so low to commit such a sin with her?

It doesn’t matter how celebrated we are. It doesn’t matter what position we hold. Sin doesn’t discriminate. It will destroy the king as well as the poor. It will bring down men of renown as well as men unknown! It will kill the master as well the servant! Our only sure escape is holiness. We must be holy and stay holy. Holiness is not a certificate man can confer on us. It is not something we earn through intellectual effort. It is a character which evolves after one has spent time with God and learnt to obey His word.

The character of a Godly man is revealed in the choices he makes in life. A Godly man will seek a Godly sister for marriage. He will not chase women for the sake of lustful pleasure. He will choose the path of righteousness and protect his integrity. God knows the danger we run into when we make wrong choices. In the book of Proverbs chapter five He warns men against immoral women.

“Run from her! Don’t go near the door of her house! If you do, you will lose your honor and hand over to merciless people everything you have achieved in life. Strangers will obtain our wealth, and someone else will enjoy the fruit of your labor. Afterward you will groan in anguish when disease consumes your body, and you will say, ‘How I hated discipline! If only I had not demanded my own way! Oh, why didn’t I pay attention to those who gave me instructions? I have come to the brink of utter ruin, and now I must face public disgrace. …. An evil man is held captive by his own sins which are ropes that catch and hold him. He will die for lack of self-control; he will be lost because of his incredible folly.”[Prov. 23 NLT]

Note:

It is a foolish and disobedient act to see someone else’s wife and covet her for yourself. “…Thou shall not covet your neighbor’s wife.” Exodus 20:17 The Bible says, “drink water out of your own cistern, and running water out of your own well. Proverbs 5:15 this means that love and sex should be reserved for your wife alone, not to be shared with strangers. One sin will lead you to another. David did not only sleep with somebody else’s wife, he had this affair with a subordinate’s wife. How low? Worst of all, there arose the need to kill the poor man in order to finish what he had started. It may not always be easy to get out of a relationship. Before you get into it, think well because you may need to do some cover up. Badly so, the punishment was grave. Glory be to God. David still had chance to repent and walk in the anointing. Man, in case you too have messed up, it is time for you to get up and never allow the troubles you have gotten yourself into to direct your destiny. David still got up, repented, sought the face of God, received forgiveness, and never walked into that kind of sin again. The decision is yours today.

Eph 4:22-28 says, “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness…” NIV

Jesus is ready to forgive you now. Arise from your old ways and shine in Jesus name. Man, do not allow your past to destroy your future. Jesus loves. Don’t continue in your sin and its guilt. Men who do not give up their past sins always end up losing everything they have worked for. Man, don’t be a loser.
